I had a lackluster day at work today. Attitudes were crummy and I was ready to get home at 4!
When Matthew came home we sacked out and I told him about my crappy day and he told me about his nasal congestion induced wooziness. We were quite the pair!
Around 7 we packed up Toodles and were trying to get out to the battlefield with him before the storms came.
I drove into the park and went toward an area we hadn't visited yet.
In a peaceful part, I saw a jogger running with a massive dog behind him, not really keeping up, but keeping in his wake. The runner didn't look back at him and I was shocked that he wasn't making sure his pet was not getting ran over or something.
I pulled ahead and parked at the Smith Monument, intending to say something to the jogger.
He ran up beside the car and I said "Hey! Is that your dog!?"
And I was very surprised by his reply, "No" and he jogged off into the woods.
Well, by that time we had found out the big, barreling doggie wasn't following his owner, he had come over happily swinging his tail and saying hello to Toodles.
My parents' neighbors used to raise Old English Sheepdogs so I knew that he resembled a shaved down, bouncy shaggy dog, and this dog must have been 1/2 Old English Sheepdog and 1/2 St. Bernard!
He looked groomed but grown out a bit, had a flea collar and a 3'' wide collar, but no ID.
Toodles greeted him but then got a little distressed when we were spending too much time fussing over this new dog.
The new dog was stinky... very stinky. Dirty. Very Dirty.
He had open sores on his ears from rubbing them. But he was amazingly friendly and happy to see us.
We can't help it, our loving nature and all.
So, I opened the back of the car door and this massive dog hopped right on in and lay down like he was used to it. I called the Catoosa Co. animal shelter, but , of course, it was after hours and no one answered.
Matthew came back from walking Toodles up to the (Smith! how eerie!) monument where we had acquired this lumbering, bouncy, stinky, dirty, in need of help animal.
Toodles sat in the front seat with Matthew and this new dog just lay down and was exceptional.
When we arrived home Matthew took the dog out to the dog lot and put Toodles inside. He walked on a leash like a pro.
Matthew fed him and put anti-biotic ointment on his ears, and replaced his nasty collars with a large one that we had bought for Toodles. He sprayed him down with Frontline and we named him Cadet, since we had found him in the battlefield.
I drove out for pizza and dog food, and came home with treats, a coffee maker, ear mite meds, and doggie shampoo. I also bought a can of Lysol which was prompty sprayed all over my seats and removed the dog odor.
We stood outside and got very dirty shampooing the dog, and he only got a tiny little bit cleaner! Ugh.
You can tell he has been loved on, groomed, etc.
He jumped out of the dog lot and ran up to our front door! So, tonight he is in the kitchen.. I hope he doesn't go crazy and tear anything up!
Matthew is going to take him to the vet tomorrow and see if he is microchipped. If not, he will need a cone on his head to keep him from scratching, and we will have to find him a family.
stinky dog eekk!

I have a bad habit of stopping when I see animals near the road too. Actually all 3 of my cats were rescues!
