40 Days has started!

"If my people who are called by my name humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land." -- 2 Chronicles 7:14

Yesterday began the 40 Days for Life campaign in Knoxville. From the e-mail update everything went great! I am so excited to get to go play a part in the movement on Sunday.

Not only are we going to Knoxville to pray, but we are getting to see my good friends Chad and James! We are having dinner on Saturday evening with Chad and then Lunch on Sunday with James. So, it has become a truly wonderful weekend planned.

Next Weekend, October 7th is Respect Life Sunday, and actually October is Respect for Life Month. We are having a prayer chain downtown in front of the Catholic Charities Building. They do this each year, and it is a Christian prayer chain, not just Catholic. Many people from area churches come down and join together for the cause.

Last night we had the RCIA class and it went really well, our family that we are sponsoring is having a very ill relative, so the mother was at her side while the son came to class with us. We learned about Jesus and his dual Divinity and Humanity.

Matthew and I came home and cleaned the house up again (trying to stick to that chore schedule!) and then crashed. I love Wednesday nights!

Today in Color!

Matthew was literally heading out the door to round up the cats when he saw this huge mass of a spider. I got as close to the sliding glass as I could stand to take this shot, the rest I did with zooming :-)

Here is the PostCard I received yesterday from Juan, the soldier we sent some things to. In case the picture doesn't come out, its an Operation Iraqi Freedom 2003 PostCard.

I contacted my state senators.

PRO-LIFE ACTION ITEM

Senator Sam Brownback of Kansas has introduced an Ultrasound Informed Consent Act. According his news release the bill ”would require that a doctor perform an ultrasound and then share the results with the woman and allow her to view the images before performing an abortion.“ Please contact our two state senators to ask that they support this bill.
Please consider e-mailing Tennessee Senator Lamar Alexander and Senator Bob Corker .

We have a lady in the Pro Life Committee who talked to us about the difference it made in those patients she had worked with as a Sonographer to be able to see the life they had created. This is a wonderful tool, and I know already some Women's Services are implementing this as an optional service.

Celebrate!

Tonight we are meeting Michael to go out to dinner to celebrate him taking the nursing board exam and getting himself a nice lil' 'ole job at Erlanger!!
I forgot to mention that this weekend we got a postcard from our Anysoldier.com soldier! We had sent him two boxes, one full of soaps, matches, necessity thingies. The other box with 18 beanie babies to hand out to the kiddies!
Well, he said THANK YOU, and gave us his e-mail. I will have to show you the postcard tomorrow, because it was FUNNY. I was so surprised to get something back.. I figured he would be too busy to respond. So that was really really nice!

Danny Thomas and St. Jude

“Thomas began talking about his devotion to Saint Jude and how he believed the saint had helped lift him to prominence in his career. ‘It was like a miracle, the way it happened,’ he said. ‘You believe in miracles, don’t you?’”

I really liked this article. Although, I have to admit I had gone all these years confusing Danny Thomas with Wendy's founder, Dave Thomas!! OOPS

Salve Regina: Road to Hell?

Salve Regina: Road to Hell?

Oh My Goodness, this was so Amazing. I remember now how nice our roads are here in the US.
I would like to maybe "walk" these roads, but definitely NEVER take a vehicle. YIKES!

You've just GOTTA see these pics!

Assertive

Well, this new drug I have been on is making me totally bonkers!! It is making me super focused (it is an off-label ADHD drug, too!) and when I get super focused I want to be left alone and get really upset at distractions and annoyances. They are my "Bitch" pills. I would like to think I just become more "Assertive". I didn't take them this weekend, mainly because while I think I could have totally tore the house up on my cleaning project, I was a little afraid of not being able to enjoy my weekend due to the "must get things done" attitude I get from the "pills". HaHa.
So, I even skipped the opportunity to work Saturday (SHOCK! AWE!) and I slept in a little and got started on the house. Since I had done the Flea Market thing with my sister two whole weekends in a row, the house was OUT OF CONTROL. Weekdays Matthew and I are too pooped to want to tackle anything major.
So, this weekend we re-arranged things that needed to be put back into order and cleaned. I can't say that we are entirely done, but we really got most of it done.
Matthew made us out a rotating schedule of simple tasks we can do after work before bedtime that won't be so harrowing. And it makes it a lot easier than Matthew or I trying to tell the other what they should do. This way we rotate and we only have the smallest things to do on the weekends.
Of course, this weekend we are working in the Thrift Store and then going to Knoxville. YaY.

The Bestest EVER!

The Bestest EVER thing to do is shop for others!
Now that I have my Sister's B-Day behind me, I am on the trail of my Nephew's B-Day gift and Niki's WEDDING PRESENT.
I am SO EXCITED.

Oh, the Christmas presents are getting picked up at Disney World, so I will have to wait to shop for those.. bummer!

The Fast and the Furious

So, I have a confession to make.
Although I was born 27 years ago and have been operating computers for the majority of that time, I must confess that I commit typing sins.
I even took "keyboarding" class in ninth grade. Do they still even offer it? It was pretty irrelevant even in 1994/5.
So, I type pretty well, I know where all the keys are. My problem is that I type and type, but I am ALWAYS staring straight at the keys as I type.
Now, I can type sufficiently if I look at the screen and type in the normal manner, but I am much more faster if I just look at the keyboard.
Everyone says "don't you have a lot of typos?" Probably. That's why I read things before I send/post them.
Honestly though, I can make a lot fewer typos by staring at the keyboard. You should try it.
This is me typing while dtaring at the screebn. See, I do entirelu better if I am not paying attention to the screen.
What about you?

How I Need a Vacation

I am in serious need of a vacation!
Being off 3 months this year healing from surgery doesn't count, either!
Ugh.. remind me December vacations are just too far away!

Last night we did a whole lotta nothing, and loved it!
So, not much else to report.

Still Rockin' the K

I left work early yesterday and ran out to the Police Service Center to get a copy of the accident report from Matthew's August 2006 collision for the Farm Bureau. It was very funny to read, and I had forgotten most of the funny details. The report actually has that the lady left the scene, telling Matthew "Deal with it!", she had a revoked license for DUI, and was driving a Saturn that had plates for an F150! Now that it has been over a year ago I can laugh, but at the time we had to shell out $500 bucks to get his Ranger fixed, and were feeling really crappy about the limited amount of what they could and would do to find the lady. Oh well.
I went to my guilty favorite store, "The K-Mart" where I found two cute tops and a sweater (that I am taking back today). They already had their Christmas things out! I was so happy!!!
I had to pick up the new Reba Mcentire cd for my Mom. I listened to it on the way to pick up Matthew from work and I actually loved it. Although, I am such a big baby I can NOT listen to the sappy songs without BooHoo-ing. That's the main reason I can't listen to country anymore.
Matthew and I went to the Little Tokyo Express on Hixson Pike for dinner (used to be the Wendy's) and it was $18 for both of us, but the food was excellent! I actually had the beef and shrimp (yes, eating SOME meat now!) and the veggies were great!
After dinner we went to Church and the RCIA class was good. Father Joe talked about morality and the benefits of always keeping God at the end of your path. He gave this same lecture to our class back on 2005. It was good though. The lady I am sponsoring had to work, but her son (who Matthew is sponsoring) came. I was so tired from not having much sleep the night before (and sitting too long!), so I got up at the end and walked to the library and sorted some of the donations that have came in. I have a trunkload to drop off at McKays.
We came home and Matthew did laundry and cat duty while I went to my Sister's house and gave her an early B-Day present, two great finds from Lakeside Collection, a store I found from blog-buddy Brandy! See what I bought her Here & Here!!!
I also found my Nephew a "Chevy Trucks" hat at "The K" and he was pleased with it. Clearance for $2.99! Can't beat "The K"!!

Sleepy, again.

After work yesterday we went to the Farm Bureau office and got insurance on the cars, the house, and our lives. LOL
By the time we were done with all the questions and all the drug tests it was way too late to go to the Pro Life meeting at church, and I was so bummed!
We ate at Pizza Hut and headed home. I tried to help my mother find some documents in their fire safe, but we had no luck.
I came home and did the usual chores, mopped a little, scooped litter, loaded in some laundry.
Matthew went to bed quickly and I got online to do a few things. When I went to bed I realized that one of the cat's had left me a wet spot on my side of the bed. This usually only happens when there is something crazy going on, maybe twice a year, so I was a bit upset. Thankful though, that with a water bed mattress we can just wipe it off with some Lysol and wash the pad & sheet set.
But still, there I was really tired and having to wait on the washing machine to finish up so I could put in my quilt.
I was so frustrated!

The Golden Rule

Let me just say it is become increasingly difficult for me to see past some people's flaws.
I am human, and judgemental. But I have to love everyone, regardless of their faults and indiscretions, or at least try to.. because those things that bug the heck out of me are small and trivial to God. He sees past them and loves those people anyways.
Someone who is no longer part of my family, but who still has an influential role in the nature of other members of my family's lives (was that discreet enough? I hope not!) is the prime example of someone who tests my limits of forginevess and Christian love.
And although I have a stong desire to see "karma" come around and bite these people right where it hurts, I know that it is God's will that everyone should love one another.
So, I will pray for (he/she/them) , my family, and myself. Hopefully they will find God and begin to be a better person. Hopefully I will learn to forgive more fully.

40 Days for Life

If you notice the new banner on the top of the page, I got it from the 40 Days for Life website. It begins on a Wednesday, so I don't see Matthew and I being able to volunteer any time until the weekend.
On Saturday the 29th, Matthew and I will be volunteering at the Ladies Of Charity Thrift Store downtown. They are moving into a new building soon, and here is an article the Times Free Press did on the shop.
After that I plan on heading to K-Town! It will be so fulfilling to be a part of something I have been so passionate about (besides the blog-ranting I do on here).

Monday evening was almost a disaster! I was all hyped up and into a "go straight home" mode. Wanting nothing more than to pick up dinner on the way and enjoy a few hours on the couch before bedtime.
But, that did not happen. As soon as I picked Matthew up from the Villas, he got a call out to the Ledford Apartments, on Concord St. Now, normally this would just be normal fare for his new job, but he was finally NOT ON CALL.
Being NOT ON CALL apparently still means that you can be drafted if the other property ON CALL guy is on another call out. So, after weeks of anticipating having Matthew be free, I sat in the car and read for over 3 hours!(Well, I did finish 2 books!) By the time we left it was 7:30!! My hopes for the evening were squashed.
We went to Rib & Loin and ate in, because we were both too hungry to smell it going down the road. I took my Mom who is still effectively a "shut in" a BBQ sandwich and we ended up with no time to do anything!
Oh, did I tell you that Friday evening Matthew, Michael and I were at Bimbo's in Dayton getting ready to eat a lovely dinner when Matthew got called out? Yes, and We had to get it to go and end up eating without him!
So, I am feeling a little bittersweet about the new job after all, and wished we lived closer in!

Fall Weekend?

The rain let up Friday and we had the most beautiful weekend with cooler temps and a strong breeze. The cats really enjoyed going outside this weekend and not having the porch be too hot to walk on!
Saturday and Sunday mornings my sister and I set up at the flea market and got rid of even more stuff from our houses! I am ready to clear the rest of it out and take it off to the charity shop!
This week is not going to be as busy as the last, but there are things we have to do. Tuesday we have the meeting with the insurance agent to plan out our insurance and get started with that.. how exciting!
Then we have our monthly Pro-Life meeting that evening.
Wednesday we have RCIA and library work.
Thursday and Friday I am planning on coming home from work and doing a whole lot of nothing!
I forgot my ProVigil pill this morning :-(, but I did remember the Byetta pen.. so at least I am half OK.

My least favorite thing right now is my reading. I have started on 4 different books! Does that happen to everyone or just me?
I get really involved in one book, then for some reason I leave it at home, or misplace it, and then I start another! I am in the "process" of reading Harry Potter book 7, two Ursula Hegi books, and an A. Lee Martinez novel. I am going to endeavor to finish these this week! No more loose ends!
I gave my mom the book by Neta jackson, the Yada Yada Prayer Group and she really liked it. I guess that will be my next book I will read once everything else is finished up. There are many books in that series, so I will try and get them cheap if I can find them at the McKays.

What's playing on my Itunes???

Bjork!!!!
"I've Seen It All"

I've seen it all, I have seen the trees,
I've seen the willow leaves dancing in the breeze
I've seen a man killed by his best friend,
And lives that were over before they were spent.
I've seen what I was - I know what I'll be
I've seen it all - there is no more to see!

You haven't seen elephants, kings or Peru!
I'm happy to say I had better to do
What about China? Have you seen the Great Wall?
All walls are great, if the roof doesn't fall!

And the man you will marry?
The home you will share?
To be honest, I really don't care...

You've never been to Niagara Falls?
I have seen water, its water, that's all...
The Eiffel Tower, the Empire State?
My pulse was as high on my very first date!
Your grandson's hand as he plays with your hair?
To be honest, I really don't care...

I've seen it all, I've seen the dark
I've seen the brightness in one little spark.
I've seen what I chose and I've seen what I need,
And that is enough, to want more would be greed.
I've seen what I was and I know what I'll be
I've seen it all - there is no more to see!

You've seen it all and all you have seen
You can always review on your own little screen
The light and the dark, the big and the small
Just keep in mind - you need no more at all
You've seen what you were and know what you'll be
You've seen it all - there is no more to see!

Robbie Willams & Soccer

My beloved, Robbie Williams, has not only moved to the US a few years ago.. but has now formed his own Football Club! I am so utterly excited.
Disappointing, though, that I am on the East Coast. Seems like the perfect opportunity to see him again!
P.S. This October 24th will be the 8th anniversary since I saw him in concert! BooHoo.
Here is a small article I found on his Football and charity:
Robbie Williams to Participate in a Charity Football Match
Robbie Williams has a panache for football, and his love for the game has met with an equally good cause.
The celebrated singer is all set to play an exhibition match in Iowa, US to raise money for a leukaemia charity.
Robbie’s celeb-packed Hollywood team LA Vale will face a local team- the Des Moines Menace, which includes Greys Anatomy star Richard Jenik and Heroes fame Santiago Cabrera.
The exhibition match is scheduled at the Des Moines Cownie Soccer Complex on April 21.
Robbie Williams fans have yet another reason to be proud of their hero.

proVigil

My Dr. appointment went great. I have sleep apnea (doesn't everyone nowadays), but it is not severe enough to have one of those sleeping contraptions.. Thank the Lord!
So, I am on a trial of proVigil.
I found this interesting article here. Here are some snippets:

UNIVERSITY academics are using a “smart” prescription drug that enhances memory and boosts concentration to give them the edge over their rivals when giving presentations.
Studies into the effects of Modafinil, an American drug, have shown it can improve mental ability without the side effects of stimulants such as amphetamines or caffeine.
Modafinil was created to help sufferers from sleep disorders. It is also stocked by the American army for use by exhausted soldiers.
In April Foresight, a government think tank, said “cognitive enhancers” such as Modafinil could be “as common as coffee” within a couple of decades to help a person think faster and sleep more efficiently.

I am trying it out today and already I feel like I have been buzzing around the office getting a lot more done!

A Place to Crash

After work last night we went to McDonald's because I was starving! We made it to Church around 6:15-ish and helped out and sat around talking until class started.
Wouldn't you know everyone was there except our two people! Well, we still stayed and enjoyed the lesson and speaker. I think the speaker had given the same exact lesson topic to our class.
After RCIA class we went over to the library where we are digging them out of donations. the is not a lot of shelf space, so we are weeding through donations for non-religious books or book that we have copies of already. You would not believe the books they get in!
Speaking of books, I am still reading (only about 30 minutes a day) the Ursula Hegi book, Stones from the River, which is the pre-quel to the book (I read last week) Floating in my Mother's Palm and it is absolutely fantastic! Each day I am excited for the time I sit in the parking lot of Matthew's work and devour it. It is the only reason I am glad we are carpooling and there is an hour between the times we leave work.
And now that it is actually beginning to be nice outside it is great!! I am so ready for the Fall...
Once we finally got home and into bed we quickly crashed. Then around 1:30 a.m. Matthew gets called out to the Ledford Apartments to fix a water leak. I will be so glad when they get their own maintenance supervisor! For now, he is on call for two properties!!!
So, I went up to Mom's and slept on and off until he called and was coming home. We got back to our bed around 3:45-ish. I was out completely. In fact, I almost decided to be late this morning and get another 30 minutes of sleep... but I decided to be good and go ahead and wake up.
This afternoon I am going straight home and laying down!

Sit and Wait

Yesterday after work Matthew and I ran up 75 to Sweetwater and went to check out Hall's Salvage. They have some nice big rugs that I would just love to have, and at cheap prices!
Then we drove back down into Cleveland where we ate at Monterrey, which is an exact replica of Amigo's, so yet another Mexican feast! I had the bean nachos, queso dip, and a coke. Yummy.
We totally forgot to stop and buy cat food though, so this morning the cats were looking sour after we emptied the last of the food into their bowl and they gave us the "that's all we get today?" look. Ouch. Cat scorn is the worst! HaHa

Lunchtime

there are two things bad about eating peanut butter & jelly sandwiches at your desk.
1) Whole Grain Bread crumbles into a mess
2) You can't make a PB&J sandwich without feeling "sticky", even after washing your hands.

It's only Tuesday??

The weekend was so jam-packed with activity, I thought for sure I would be breezing through this week.
Work is crazy. There is just a lot to do, and everything seems to be taking longer than it should. Every truck has something go wrong with it..ugh.
Last night we had to run over to Matthew's old job to pick up some tools he had left. But after that "side trip" we went straight up to my Mom's. My Aunt was visiting and we had some dinner. I was so starving I almost broke my diet and had a hot dog. But, Matthew reminded me I would be breaking my diet for a hot dog. Funny what you crave though.
I will eventually eat some red meat/chicken (at some point). I am trying to see how long I can hold out though. Since I swore off meat for purely nutritional purposes and not anything "meaningful or deep" I feel like I wouldn't kick myself if I broke down and had a hamburger. It is just something nice I am doing for myself.
I am on my second Ursula Hegi book, and I love the way she writes!
----------------------------------------------
Matthew and I will be participating in the 40 Days for Life, so hopefully there is a trip to Knoxville for us in the time from: Sep. 26 to Nov. 4 ! YaY

Knoxville’s historic
40-day pro-life campaign

A call for people of faith to join together in record numbers and to go to the streets to end the injustice of abortion

Think about how God has used 40-day time periods throughout history to bring about major change...
• Noah and the 40 days of rain
• Moses and the 40 days on Mount Sinai and his scouts who reconnoitered the Promised Land for 40 days
• David and Goliath's challenge of 40 days
• Elijah and the strength derived from one meal for a 40 day journey
• Nineveh and the 40 days to reform and repent
• Jesus and His 40 days in the wilderness
• The disciples and their 40 days with Jesus following His resurrection
Now think about what God can accomplish if one community united together for 40 days to end abortion...
• How will believers be transformed?
• How will the lives of mothers and their babies be transformed?
• How will the Knoxville community be transformed?
• What effect will this transformation have across the rest of our nation?

A bridge too far? Chattanooga, thanks to prayer, sacrifice and the solidarity of the various faith communities in their area, is now free of abortion and Planned Parenthood clinics. It all started with prayer and people like those featured in a documentary at www.40daysforlife.com/show.cfm.

Flea Market Philanthropy

This weekend was a blast. Friday night Matthew and I ran a few errands like going to the bank and grocery store. We made it home and Michael and Jennifer came up and we had a wonderful spaghetti (meat-free for me, of course) that Matthew made for us and wheat rolls that were yummy.
We all four played a movie-memory game where we just sat around and took turns naming movies that began with a certain letter until one person couldn't name one, then we'd go on to the next letter. It was fun. We had originally began doing the game with book titles, but it became a little slow so we switched to movies.
Then Matthew helped us figure out some dinner places and itinerary for our December Disney trip. I can't believe we actually had a good time without even turning the TV on.. LOL.
Saturday I got up early and met my sister at the Flea Market. She was setting up her stuff and I brought a table and just helped out with the set-up and everything. It was so much fun! At the end of about 4 hours we were just giving the stuff away.. anything rather than taking it back home! Our new philosophy is to not take anything you wouldn't want to give away. so, no regrets!
Later on Saturday Matthew and I went shopping and found him some great work boots at Sears, a steal at 35 bucks (compared to the original 90!). We ate at Famous Dave's, which is a BBQ place, but I ordered the smoked salmon, garlic mashed potato, and cole slaw and it was divine! It is my new favorite dish!
Sunday morning I took a carload of my things and was set up at the flea market again before 7 am. Stefanie came and helped out like I did with hers and it was another successful morning of people watching, selling things cheap (.25) and finally having a give-away. The things we couldn't find people to take, we drove down the street to goodwill. I just had so much fun moving boxes of useless goodies from my house!!!
After the flea market, I came home and cleaned up and headed back out. I met Niki and her friend at the Mall and we went to the Bridal Show at the Trade Center. It was really nice. They had about 1/2 as much space as the Home Show we went to a few months ago, but all the things you would need if planning a wedding.
I am so glad now that Matthew and I did not have the traditional wedding. Why I wouldn't tell anyone not to have a big wedding, looking back I just don't have any regrets or feel that I missed out. Those things just aren't important in the long term scheme of things. No one is going to remember the centerpieces, the chair-covers, or even the flowers. I've found out that all of those little details you get to micro-manage just don't mean anything to me. Plus, that's a chunk of money to shell out for a few hours. The only lasting thing will be the pictures.
Well, anyway, the weekend was really great. But I am going home today and crashing!

Birthday Blahs

Yesterday was my birthday. Tuesday night Matthew's parents took us out to eat at one of my favorites, El Meson. I had a spinach quesadilla and it was really good.
Yesterday Matthew took me on an extended lunch break to Las Margaritas and I had a bean burrito.. yum.
Last night we went to Mojo Burrito for dinner before church, and I had a rice, pinto bean, lettuce, cheese, and sour cream burrito that was exceptionally good.
Well, after 3 "southwestern" eateries in a row I am ready for more bland fare.

Church went well. It was our first "class" with the RCIA group where they had a discussion on some questions they had about things like genuflection. I can't believe Matthew and I are Sponsors this time around.. it seems odd to be part of the group there to help answer questions. But we are so blessed to be there.
After the discussion portion, Father David came in to give a talk about the Church's Social Doctrine, going over Corporal and Spiritual Acts of Mercy, and answering a lot of the class' questions.
Matthew and I found it hard to leave, but after being there over and hour and a half, we said good-bye to our class and excused ourselves.
It being my birthday, my "not so good at communicating plans" family had expected us to be home for cake/gifts after work. After going to our Church obligations we made it home after 9 p.m., but was still able to enjoy our time with everyone and share cake.
I am so glad the B-Day is over, though!
Tonight I am going home, crashing, and spending time with Matthew and our cats. This weekend is going to be full again, with going to Mass and a Dinner at Church on Saturday, Gym, and going to the Bridal Show with Niki on Sunday!

I am surprised at how excited I became when I heard Fred Thompson is officially running. I have no idea what he stands for, but somehow I have subconscious feelings that I like him. Odd.

10 years after her death, Mother Teresa's legacy lives on in Calcutta

CALCUTTA, India (AP) -- The destitute and the diseased still gather outside Mother Teresa's clinics in this sprawling city in eastern India, where the nun known simply as "Mother" dedicated her life to the poorest of the poor.

Mother Teresa died 10 years ago Wednesday, but the legacy of the Roman Catholic nun who became a Nobel Peace Prize winner continues to inspire. The order she founded, the Missionaries of Charity, has expanded -- the group says it now has more than 4,800 sisters and more than 750 homes worldwide.

Gopal Das, 50, was living on the streets with a malignant stomach tumor, and Ninandath, who goes by one name, had a festering leg wound when Missionaries of Charity sisters found them.

"We would have been dead if the sisters had not brought us here," said Das. He was staying at Nirmal Hriday, or "Pure Heart," the first of the many clinics Mother Teresa opened in Calcutta.

Moon Moon Mondal, 17, was raised by the nuns because her parents couldn't afford to keep her at home.

She thanks the nuns for educating her so she could find a job. She returns most days to visit her brother and sister and to see the nuns.

In this community, there has been no public sign of disappointment over Mother Teresa's doubts about her faith, detailed in a new collection of her writings.

"Come Be My Light: The Private Writings of the 'Saint of Calcutta,"' recounts Mother Teresa's anguish over the crisis of faith, and the pain she felt over her separation from God. Some writings indicate that, at times, she may have doubted the existence of God.

Sister Nirmala, who now oversees the order, sees no contradictions in that spiritual struggle.

"It is part of our Mother's spiritual life," she said at a ceremony Sunday on the 97th anniversary of Mother Teresa's birth. "It is the path God chose for her deep interior purification and transformation."

Mother Teresa was an ethnic Albanian who came here in 1929 as Sister Teresa after she said she heard a call from God to serve the poorest of the poor. She set up schools for street children and medical clinics for slum-dwellers.

In 1950, she founded the Missionaries of Charity. The order is still housed in the same four-story building Calcutta residents know as Mother House.

When she died on September 5, 1997, the Missionaries of Charity had nearly 4,000 nuns and ran roughly 600 orphanages, soup kitchens, homeless shelters and clinics. In the decade since, people both inside and outside the group say the order has maintained its standards.

The group has "continued to function in the same spirit and work with the same sincerity among the poor and unprivileged," said Dr. Ruma Chatterjee of the Society for the Visually Handicapped, a nonprofit group that works with Mother Teresa's organization.

But Mother Teresa was not beloved by all. She was criticized for taking donations from Haitian dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier and disgraced American financier Charles Keating. Detractors opposed her stance against birth control.

Still, she remains popular in Calcutta, especially among the poor.

Krishna Das was among those rescued by Mother Teresa and her sisters some 30 years ago. Today, he works with the volunteers at Nirmal Hriday.

"I have seen the sisters during Mother's time and also now," Das said. "This center is serving the same way and providing help to the poor with the same zeal."

Sister Nirmala hasn't become a household name like Mother Teresa, but she never expected to be.
"My way of coping with the challenge is simple -- just to be myself," she said. "I didn't fill Mother's shoes, that is impossible. I followed the footsteps left by the Mother."

Several ceremonies were planned for Wednesday, including candlelight processions and a Mass to be conducted by the Archbishop of Calcutta. There will also be a multifaith ceremony at Mother House.

Mother Teresa was beatified in 2003 after the Vatican said an Indian woman's prayers to the nun rid her of an incurable tumor. Under Catholic tradition, an additional miracle must be verified for her to become a saint.

But those who worked with Mother Teresa are not worried about the timing.

"In the heart of people," said Sister Nirmala, "Mother is always a saint."

Planning on Planning

Have you seen the floor plans for the Katrina Cottages they are selling at Lowe's? You can build them for ultra cheap and they are adorable!! Check them out HERE. Wow, a good thing that happened because of a hurricane. :-)
The looong weekend was really just a crazy scramble.
Friday night we spent having a good social time with some family that we don't get to see all that often. It was nice.
Saturday Matthew got called out a lot and we ran our errands and got to go visit the Ladies of Charity thrift store downtown that we will be volunteering at starting Sept. 29th!! I really can not wait!
Sunday Matthew got called out again and I took a giant sized nap. On Labor Day, Matthew actually had to work! I stayed home and redecorated and moved furniture around. I really like the new set-up.
Not much other than that to report. Blah, but consistent.

Lewd Conduct

So, I read the transcript to Senator Larry Craig's arrest.
I am really surprised that it has gotten as far as it did. If you read it, you will know exactly what I am talking about.
Even if he was "making gestures" is that really an arrest-able offense? I wouldn't think so.
Mainly, I don't care whether he is innocent or guilty.. but I don't like it when "high profile" cases are based on little proof. But then, I've never been soliciting in a men's room. :-) haha
The main problem here is people's "perception" of hypocrisy. So, that because someone is a public official and of a certain party, that they should be held to higher expectations of lawfulness. I agree to that to a certain extent.
But just being a republican senator who voted against "homosexual" legislation just makes him a good representative for his home state.
Let's not forget that they are "representatives" in a "representative democracy" who are there to vote the will of the constituents.
How many other politicians do you think vote their own conscience EACH vote, especially on "morality" issues?!?!?! Very few, I would guesstimate.
